WALKING IN SCOTLAND

NORTHERN HIGHLIGHTS

In choosing Sutherland, the Orkneys and Shetlands we have selected for you one of the most beautiful, fascinating and intriguing areas of northern Europe.

Here you discover extremes of Nature where land and sea merge, where mankind has left everywhere an astonishing legacy of monuments to 6000 years of history; a rich culture born of the mingling of Celtic and Viking peoples, and some of the most abundant birdlife in the world, as well as picturesque little villages in which visitors and locals alike relax to a daily pace of life characterised by peace and tranquillity. You too will be seduced by the atmosphere and charm of the islands, far removed from the frenetic activity of major cities. You will stay in small, family run hotels which pride themselves on personal service and excellent food. In order to make the most of the daylight hours ashore, two nights will be spent in leisurely travelling in comfortable cabins on island ferries.

An experienced, friendly and qualified walking and tour guide who knows Scotland intimately will accompany you and give you personal attention.

Your tour will include the Highland capital, Inverness, and a visit to the granite city of Aberdeen; you will spend a day walking on the north coast of Scotland; three days in the Orkney Islands, and two days in the Shetlands.

Our varied walks take us through a great diversity of scenery, from the world of mountains and waterfalls, wild moorlands and fertile glens of the far northern mainland, to the islands' gigantic cliffs with their teeming seabird colonies, pointed rock formations and isolated sea-stacks, caves and blowholes, and along deserted beaches of white sand, as well as through picturesque, lush, green hills and island valleys full of wild flowers.

In the North Atlantic summer daylight hardly fades: long, lingering sunsets create an enchanted atmosphere and bewitching light that dissolve into a romantic semi-darkness only around midnight.

Sightseeing highlights include the Stone Age settlement of Skara Brae; numerous cairns and stone circles, most notably the Ring of Brodgar; the Churchill Barriers; Scapa Flow; the Italian Chapel; St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall; brochs; strange rock formations such as the Old Man of Hoy, and much more. The tour also incorporates glimpses of the unique Flow Country of Sutherland, in the most sparsely populated part of Britain, a world wildlife site of international importance set amid scenery little altered, except by the weather, since it was sculpted by ice into rough, isolated mountains, thousands of lochans and rolling open moorland.

You do not need to be an experienced walker, but you do have to be fit enough to walk for about five hours.

Groups are small, usually about twelve people, so that we can give you personal attention. On the walks you need carry only a small daysack to hold your packed lunch, any additional clothing and camera.

We will be very pleased to send you a day by day itinerary with detailed descriptions by email, fax or post. Would you like to receive a detailed description?
